The Bigger Picture: ‘MEN’ and the psychology of masculinity – Houston Public Media

Rory Kinnear and Jessie Buckley in the new folk horror film, Men.

Viewers of the new film Men might do a double take when they see actor Rory Kinnear playing a landlord, a police officer, a vicar, and even a mischievous child opposite Harper Marlowe, the singular protagonist played by Jessie Buckley.

After arriving in a small English village for some time alone after a traumatic experience, Harper finds herself beset by these men who, in various ways, ignore, disrespect, or outright harass her as she copes with her trauma.

In this month’s installment of The Bigger Picture, where Houston Matters examines cultural and social issues in film, we explore the psychology of masculinity and when certain “male” behaviors become toxic.

In the audio above, producer Joshua Zinn talks with area film critic Donna Copeland and Jonathan Schwartz, dean of the College of Public Service at the University of Houston-Downtown.
