Ralf Rangnick is using the Manchester United sports psychologist Sascha Lense to address his team’s alarming habit of throwing away leads.

United have scored first in 11 of the 13 games in which the interim manager has been in charge — but won only six.

The habit has become even more alarming in recent weeks, with United exiting the FA Cup in the fourth round to Middlesbrough and drawing with Burnley and Southampton — all games that finished 1-1 after Rangnick’s men had taken the lead.

Lense, who was one of Rangnick’s first appointments after his arrival at Old Trafford, is involved in one-to-one and collective sessions to try to solve a problem that the coach concedes is now mental.
