Mark McGhee insists Dundee psychology worked despite St Johnstone draw – Football Scotland

Mark McGhee insists his mind games worked on his Dundee players even though they could only manage a draw with St Johnstone.

The Dark Blues look doomed to relegation after they failed to cut the points difference between themselves and Saints, which remains at five points with four games to play.

The 64-year-old created headlines through the week by claiming he’d been preparing for the crunch match by starving himself and going without heating – then claiming he would go naked next week if his side managed a win.

Ridiculed in some quarters for the comments, he insists it did positively affect the players’ psychology.

They started the match on top and were deservedly 1-0 up at half-time before conceding a Shaun Rooney equaliser.

McGhee said: “Of course it worked. You can’t say it didn’t work because we drew the game.

“We started brilliantly and the boys’ attitude going into the game was ‘we’re going to win’.

“Coming in at half-time, it looked like there was only going to be one winner.

“I was just disappointed we didn’t get a second goal in the first half.

“So yeah, of course it worked. And it’ll work going into the remaining games because we are not conceding.

“We’ve four games left. Anything can happen and as long as our players remain in the frame of mind they’re in, they’ve still got a chance of winning football matches.”

McGhee also pointed out he can only work with the players at his disposal after taking over from James McPake in February, after the closure of the winter transfer window.

Asked what he can do to improve the Dee’s fortunes, he points out he simply has to get the best out of his charges as he can’t change them.

“I do what I’m doing, working hard at training,” he replied.

“But I can’t change the players, who they are. They are who they are, they have the ability they have and that’s what they bring.
